Outside the safety zone of your home there are a surprising number of dangers to your child. However a fact that some people fail to realize is the hidden dangers lurking at home. One of the most overlooked is the dangers of the Internet. Because of this too many children become victims of online predators. Open communication is very important to your children so that you can take steps to protect them from this very real threat to their safety.
So where are these predators lurking? They generally frequent chat rooms and try to get on your child’s instant message system like; MSN, AOL, and Yahoo. Before your child gets onto the Internet it is wise to instruct them how to do this safely.
Here are some tips:
Avoid giving personal information to strangers. Instead use a handle or nickname, when using chat rooms and instant message systems.
Do not be naïve and do not trust anyone. Never let down your guard just because the person seems nice and friendly. This is exactly how predators lure in their victims. They wait until they gain your trust and as soon as they have your personal information will hunt you down and can even hurt you.
Always keep open communications with your children. Never become so busy that you cannot listen to them. The moment your child finds that you are not listening they will seek help elsewhere. This can lay them wide open to online predators.
